Umpire Expectations

The Umpire Director has provided his expectations for each umpire participating in the Umpire Program. Following these guidelines will not only make your experience more successful, but will also maintain the high quality of fairness for the league making everyone's experience all the better.

  • Appearance: All umpires are to be in the complete and correct uniform while on the field. No exceptions.
  • Read the rule book at least once a week.
  • Umpires are to arrive and walk on the field together not less than 10 minutes before game time.
  • Once you accept a game it is yours.
  • Other than to determine the start time or time limit of a game or a medical emergency, cell phones or other devices are not to be used or seen on the field.
  • Plate umpires are to receive the lineups from the managers before the start of the game.
  • Between innings the Plate umpire should stand about 20 feet from home plate on a foul line and the base umpire should be in short right field between first and second base.
  • Do not speak to anyone on the other side of the fence. Speaking with people on the other side of the fence will only cause problems.
  • If the spectators are out-of-line ask the manager to control them. If he can not or will not control them, if possible, find a Board member and ask them to remove the spectator. If a Board member is not available eject the manager and spectator.
  • All problems including protests, ejections and serious injuries are to be reported to the Umpire Director immediately after the game.
  • Hustle at all times.
  • All close calls, and all ball and strike calls should be seen and heard by everyone on the field.
